As A Man Thinks

Are you ready to join me in deciding that we will not justify our defeated attitudes and difficult circumstances with lame excuses about how somebody else and everything else is responsible for why life “stinks” at any given time! It’s time for us, as men, to take responsibility for the way in which we have been thinking and acting for far too long! It’s meaningless to continue bringing up those same old tired excuses so that we can blame our stinking circumstances or lack of success on God or anyone else…while continuing to go about our merry way thinking and living in such a way that produces so little of real value. So often God’s getting a bad rap for our mess while at the same time putting the owner’s manual (a.k.a. the Bible) and perfect model for success (Jesus, a.k.a. the Son of God) on a silver platter for all to access…for free!
I do, however, have some good news for anyone who will receive it! It’s never too late to change how you think…and then to see those rotten patterns in our lives soon follow. An ancient Chinese proverb once said, “As a man thinks within himself, so he is.” Actually that’s Proverbs 23:7. God made that up, dude, not some Buddhist Monkster! (No such word, but I’m sticking with it) Not even Mother Teresa could have come up with all those “original” quotes she’s so famous for if it weren’t for the truth of God within her! Don’t lose the point here.
“As a man thinks within himself, so he is.” How true it is! Whatever you and I are dwelling on, thinking about, and regularly contemplating…our actions are almost always reflecting those thought patterns. If you think about and dwell on your wife and children much of the time, you’re probably a very good husband and father. If you think about naked women (other than your wife) all the time, it’s very likely that you’re addicted to pornography. What have you been spending your time thinking about lately? Some of us should be encouraged by the answer to that question. For others of us…maybe even the majority of us…not so much.
I think you get the point! Unfortunately, most of us do not agree…with the point. How do I know that most of us do not agree? Because our actions tell us otherwise. Most likely you agree in principle. But remember…real agreement comes when a man’s actions line up with what he thinks! “As a man thinks within himself, so he is.” What are your thoughts telling the world around you? Are you satisfied with what they know? Should you even care?
What are you thinking about, dwelling on, distracted by, obsessed with? Your business, your hobbies, your wife, your biceps, a new flat screen LCD HDTV, your kids, your purpose in life, another women? Stay with me…we’ll look further into this question of how your current thoughts will inevitably take you to places of great heartache or to places of great fulfillment! Think about it!
