At Your Fingertips

Last week I had the opportunity to speak to a local Optimist Club here in Greensboro. The Optimists are an international group of civic minded individuals who’s focus is on the youth in communities around the world. I am past president of the local chapter from several years ago, so the lunch was very much like a homecoming for me since I haven’t been back to visit the club in almost two years. The group asked me talk about MOVE and NightWatch, in particular, which several of the members had learned about after reading the article written about Pete & Ricky back in August. What a wonderful group of people. So welcoming and warm. It was great to see so many familiar old faces (some very old)!
As I began to describe how MOVE had come to be and then proceeded to share more about my personal experiences, I realized that I had referred more than once to how I felt about this “time in my life” as having been very “rewarding”. I was about to use the adjective again as I was describing having grown closer to many of you and how together many of us had been working to serve many of the hurting and homeless people in our community. I caught myself as I was about to use that word again when I stopped dead in my tracks and began to explain that those men and those experiences were far more valuable than a word like “rewarding” could effectively describe. In fact, I explained to my Optimist friends that those relationships and experiences could not merely be described in the same way as I have often described having conquered some nice business deal!! Rewarding!! These relationships that have been forged are far more than rewarding. They’re more like “life-changing” and “profoundly moving”! I have met and grown close to men that I would dare say I’d die for! I have learned invaluable life-lessons and critical information from many of you! I have served with you and your families on the front lines of some of the most challenging battle fronts within our community! In this past year my personal growth has been accelerated by light-years because of many of you! More than ever before, I am certain of one thing! We desperately need each other if we are to get really good at understanding and practicing what it truly means to be a “man of God”! We cannot do it alone…without each other! We have an awesome opportunity at our fingertips….
